Year 2 is a very exciting year, at Peter Hills. Much of the year is spent reinforcing important key skills introduced in Y1, especially in Reading, Writing and Maths. Year 2 being the end of KS2 is also the year when SATs assessments take place, and so children and parents will be well prepared for this important step.
A range of genres are covered in English, which aim to prepare children for progression into KS2, such as 'Letter Writing', 'Biography' and 'Narrative'. There is a big emphasis on reading skills, which are underpinned and supported by skills covered in Optima Phonics. The expectation, therefore, is that children are reading regularly with an adult at home.
Of course, reading skills support mathematical understanding, and in Y2 maths skills are embedded through increased problem-solving. Topics covered in maths begin with number skills and enhancing these, and there is a deeper dive into topics such as 'Shape and Space' and 'Measurement'.
